This course is comprised of a theoretical component, a pre-clinical component to be completed on-site at Holland College, Charlottetown campus and a clinical component to be completed at a pre-approved dental office. The theoretical component of this course, will be delivered at a distance from Holland College through the dental assisting program. The student will have up to a maximum of 12 weeks to study the theoretical information prior to completing a written exam - the student will be given a maximum of three (3) hours to complete this exam of approximately 200 questions. The exam will be delivered at Holland College Charlottetown campus or the student may arrange for an acceptable proctor (agreeable to both Holland College and the applicable licensing body for that particular province). Exams will be marked by a Holland College instructor. Upon successful completetion of the written exam, the student will be required to attend Holland College for a two week pre-clinical component (For our purposes, pre-clinical means - clinical within an educational facility). The pre-clinical session must be completed within one month of successfully completing the written exam. During the pre-clinical session the student must first successfully prove competency in each skill on a dental mannequin then must prove competency by performing the same skills on a fellow student. Once competency has been proven pre-clinically the student is then required to prove competency in those same skills in a clinical setting (For our purposes - clinical means within a dental practice). The clinical component must be completed within 8 weeks of completing the pre-clincal component.
