This one day course is designed to provide "Phase 1" training to dental assistants in the following skills: Apply topical anaesthetic; Apply pit and fissure sealants; Apply desensitizing agents; Use, care, and maintenance of coronal whitening by bleaching trays. "Phase 2" training will require the student/dental assistant perform these skills in a dental office setting "live" under the supervision of a dentist. The student/dental assistant will be sent a pre-course package upon registration which will include all theoretical material for each of the above mentioned skills. Upon arrival at the college, the student/dental assistant will be required to write an exam based on the theory included in the pre-course package and must achieve a mark of 75 percent prior to beginning the 2nd phase of training. The instructor will do a pre-clinical component. The student/dental assistant will have an opportunity to practice the skill on a model, and will then be evaluated on each skill by the instructor. Upon successful completion of "Phase 1", the student/dental assistant will then be provided with a certificate which they will give to the dentist who is supervising their "Phase 2". The dentist will supervise and evaluate the student/dental assistant performing a minimum of four (4) Pit and Fissure Sealants on three (3) different patients and upon completion of Phase 2, the dental assistant will forward documentation along with their current license to PEI Dental Council for licensing upgrade. PREREQUISITES: All applicants please check with your licensing body prior to applying, to determine licensing requirements. - Proof of PEI Level II licensure (copy of renewal receipt or a letter of good standing from the PEI Dental Council), a letter from a licensed dentist stating their intention to supervise the Phase 2 - practical portion of the Additional Skills Upgrade/Refresher Course. NOTE: Deadline to register is 2 weeks prior to course start date Please wear your uniform to the course.
