The Routine Venipuncture course is a continuing education offering for Licensed Practical Nurses. The purpose of the course is to teach LPNs best practice techniques for collecting venous blood samples from adults. This one day course is comprised of home study, 4 hours of classroom lecture and 4 hours of laboratory instruction. During the laboratory session, you are required to draw a venous blood sample from another student and all students must agree to provide a blood sample. All students will be required to complete a clinical component at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. You are required to complete 20 successful venous blood collections. You will be supervised by a QEH Laboratory Technologist. Your clinical time and date will be finalized when you come to the College for the classroom component of the course. The Student will learn the basic procedure for venipuncture, appropriate handling and storage of blood specimens, required equipment including vacutainer systems, hospital laboratory requirements and therapeutic patient communications.
