The course will run over a 4 day period from 9am to 12pm each day. Each day will focus on a different area of computer skills, designed with senior citizen's in mind: Day 1: Computer Basics - Participants will learn the "in's and out's" of their computer. Starting from scratch, learners will be taught about memory, hardware and software, storage devices (CD's and floppy disks), among other things, in easy to understand terminology. Exercises will include simple word processing, saving/copying/pasting/printing files, opening/deleting/restoring files, proper manner of turning computers on and off, mouse maneuvering, shortcut keys, etc. Participants should come away with an understanding of how the computer works, as well as comfort with navigation around their computer. This will provide a foundation to build on during the rest of the camp. Day 2: Introduction to the Internet - Participants will learn all about the internet. Subjects covered will be how the internet works, comparing Internet Service Providers, connecting to the internet, discovering web browsers, breakdown of web addresses (URL's), learning to 'surf', links, bookmarking, and how to use search engines. The participant should leave with a basic understanding of internet principles. Day 3: Searching & Internet Tools - Participants will continue to explore the internet by being introduced to the many different ways to search for information. Topics covered will be the different search engines available, types of search engines, boolean operators, geneology searches, advanced search techniques, downloading and installing programs, zipping files, viruses and how to protect yourself against them, finding and installing useful browser plug-ins, and e-commerce. The participant should leave with more knowledge about the internet and useful concepts regarding transferring files, compressing data, virus protection and shopping online. Day 4: Communicating Online - The object of this session is to instruct participants on how to use their computer as an effective means of communication. Topics covered today will be email (each participant will go through a registration process for a new web-based email account), logging into your email, sending multiple emails, sending file attachments, receiving and reading email, replying to email, creating an address book, and a glossary of common email terms. Once email is covered, Instant Messaging will be introduced. The participants should come away with new information regarding ways to communicate over the internet.
