This course is designed for students in the final stages of the Practical Nursing program and focuses on the care of adult patients with complex and coexisting health conditions in acute and sub-acute patient care settings. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking, clinical judgment, and prioritization skills to manage multifaceted patient needs. Students will explore advanced surgical care, multisystem disorders, chronic illness management, and emergency response. The course highlights the practical nurse’s role in recognizing changes in patient condition, supporting care planning under the direction of a registered nurse, and reinforcing patient and family education. A strong focus is placed on interprofessional collaboration and effective communication within the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure safe, coordinated, and patient-centered care. This course prepares students to transition into entry-level nursing practice with competence, confidence,and professionalism. To progress in the program, the student must maintain a grade of C or better in Practical Nursing program courses. Concurrent: This course is intended to be taught concurrently with NURS 1302 Medical-Surgical II Skills and NURS 1303 Medical-Surgical II Clinical.
