This course provides a basic working knowledge in five topics: 1) Public Land Survey System divisions of townships and sections; 2) Interpreting a variety of maps, including types of maps, scales, symbology, legends, and mapping unique to timber harvesting; 3) the Global Positioning System (GPS), including the applications for land divisions and forestry with an emphasis on units mounted in the equipment; 4) Using a magnetic compass to traverse and orient a map, including the relationship of a compass to land divisions and GPS; and 5) Emergency electronic communications, including how to communicate emergency messages and requests for aid from the woodland environment. Prerequisite(s): ENGL 1010 or ENGL 1010C & MATH 1050 , MATH 1050C , MATH 1070C or MATH 1070
