This course is designed to explore the role of religion in society. Religion will be viewed not only as a fundamental institution within the social structure, but also as a meaning system (a set of symbols, values, myths, and rituals) and belonging system (a set of networks and emotional bonds between people) that affect social processes. The focus of the course will be on the influence that various religions have on the society in which they exist and, in turn, on the effect of that social structure and culture on the religion. Students will develop a sociological awareness of the complexity of the interrelationships between religion and society. This course satisfies the Gordon Rule writing requirement. A grade of "C" or higher must be attained.
