XIP 5050 -- Mattie M. Kelly Summer Institute -- Hurricanes 6 contact hrs (Offered as needed) Workshop for high school science teachers; counts for continuing education with the DOE, which the Okaloosa school board will arrange. Attendees will be able to describe and teach to their own students the following: What a hurricane is and how it forms, moves and intensifies; What the environmental and economical impacts are on Fla.; What the possible effects of global climate change are on hurricane frequency and intensity; How scientists study hurricanes (i.e., hurricane hunters, numerical models, satellites and radars, etc.); How to forecast and track a hurricane. In addition, attendees will have discussed and practiced the scientific process and identifying the independent variable as appropriate for the topic. Mattie M.
