Through this course, students have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of culture as it affects perception and management of health. The course explores basic health concepts that guide the student in the development of health promotion and disease preventive measures for diverse population groups. The course emphasizes the influence of culture on health care practices and the delivery of care for individuals, groups, and communities. The course focuses on concepts related to health beliefs and the influence of relevant issues such as health literacy, health disparities and cultural competence on the delivery of safe patient care. Prerequisite: Students must have an Associate in Science-Registered Nurse degree which included theoretical instruction and clinical application in medical, surgical, obstetrical, pediatric, geriatric, and psychiatric nursing; personal, family, and community health concepts; pharmacology and administration of medications; legal aspects of practice; interpersonal relationships and leadership skills; professional role and function; health teaching and counseling skills; and clinical experience in acute care, long-term care, and community settings.
