ENGL-231 — American Literature to 1865

This course examines the development of American literature beginning with the writings of the first European explorers and Native American oral tradition, featuring selected essays, autobiographical writings, poems, fiction, and drama from the mid-15th century to 1865. Through critical reading and analysis, students will deepen their understanding of how literature is informed by and interrogates historical events, cultural forces, and worldviews. Course
