In this course students are introduced to the fundamental separation and identification techniques used in the organic chemistry laboratory. The techniques covered include melting point determination, recrystallization, simple distillation, fractional distillation, steam distillation, column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, solvent partitioning, acid-base extraction, rotary evaporation, and IR spectroscopy.

Prerequisites: CHM 1046, CHM 1046L
