This course prepares the teacher candidate to develop substan- tive understanding of the six components of reading as a pro- cess; oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Teachers will also scaffold student learning by applying principles of research-based read- ing instruction and integrating the six components of reading to better serve the needs of a variety of learners.
