Dental assisting program students are introduced to the phi- losophy and principle of preventive dentistry. Emphasis is on the dental auxiliary’s role in patient’s education and care. Top- ics include development of plaque and calculus, development of carious lesions, plaque control techniques for the patient, fluorides, tooth stains. Plaque indices, patient education and motivation, caries activity testing, and smoking cessation.
