ETP 1532C — Installation of Wind Energy Systems

3 credits · 3 hours

This class will provide students with the skills needed to enter the field of wind turbine installation focused on operations and maintenance of: (1) Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs), and (2) Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs). Students will participate in research projects comparing HAWTs and VAWTs. Students will learn the principles behind turbine design and operation, including corrosion control. Students will learn how to evaluate a potential site (e.g. inland, coastal, wetlands, and offshore), with special attention to Karst topography. Students will learn to specify the components of wind energy system. Students will be able to install, startup, and test a typical wind energy system. Students will be able to trouble-shoot and maintain a typical wind energy system. Hands-on labs are included.
